   Ryder Cup Format

1.  Selecting Captains. The Captains for the Ryder Cup are selected by the previous year's Captain at the Champions Dinner.  Example: The 2004 Captains will announce the captains for their respective 2005 teams at the 2004 Champions Dinner.

2.  Eligible Members. To be eligible to play in the Ryder Cup, a BGC member must have played in at least one BGC event in the previous calendar year (excluding previous Ryder Cups) and must be current in his Bro Golf Club dues.

3.  Supplemental Draft. Approximately one month before the tournament, a BGC meeting will be held at the Eagles Club.  All players who did not play in the previous year's Ryder Cup are placed in in the supplemental draft pool (regardless of whether they may have played in any prior year). Following a coin flip, the captains will draft players from the supplemental pool until one of the teams reaches its full compliment of players (i.e., 1/2 half of all eligible players for that year). The players not selected automatically join the remaining team so that it too has a full compliment of players.

4.  Pairings. At the same BGC meeting, the captains will conduct the pairings.  The captain who wins a coin flip will put forth his first player (i.e., #1 player in first foursome).  The second captain will identify his #1 player for the first foursome.  These two players will play against each other in the 2nd 9 hole singles match play as described below.  The second captain will then identify his #2 player for the first foursome and the first captain will identify his #2 player for the first foursome.  These two players will also play against each other in the 2nd 9 hole singles match play as described below and will team with their #1 players for the 1st 9 hole doubles match play as described below.

5.  Doubles Competition. The 1st nine holes is a doubles match play competition worth 1 point.  The doubles match will be played in the "Fourball" format.  "Fourball" play is a match in which each member of the two-man teams play their own ball.  The team whose player posts the best net score on a hole wins.  If the score is tied at the end of nine holes, the match is halved and each team receives 1/2 point.

6.  Singles Competition.  The 2nd nine holes is singles match play with each match worth 1 point. If the score is tied at the end of nine holes, the match is halved and each team receives 1/2 point.

7.  Tee Boxes.  All players will play from the blue set of tees.

8.  Handicapping.  Players will receive strokes based on their index as of the month the Ryder Cup is conducted (as converted to a course handicap). (Note: the Executive Committee reserves the right to use an average of recent indexes if a player's index changes substantially and suspiciously in the month immediately prior to the Ryder Cup).  A player will receive the number of strokes as indicated by his course handicap (example:  a player with a 15 course handicap will receive 15 strokes).  The strokes will be allocated to holes beginning with the most difficult rated hole to the easiest rated hole.  For the four holes of alternate shots, the handicap for each team will be based on the average of the two players' indexes.

9.Champions Dinner. The losing team is required to pay for both food and drinks at the Champions Dinner held immediately following the Ryder Cup.  Any losing player who skips the Champions Dinner shall be required to pay double the required amount.
